Duties and Standards for Machining Skills Levels I, II, & III
Published by the NTMA. A skill standard, in the simplest sense, is a description of work to a specified level of performance. The National Institute for Metalworking Skills, Inc. (NIMS) Machining Skill Standards are the result of major efforts by shop owners and supervisors, workers, associations and educators from all over the country. The standards are an important tool in assessing worker's abilities and training needs. The standards describe in detail the tasks a worker must be able to perform at increasing skill levels with machine tools, instruments, drawing and benchwork, as well as skills in calculations, work planning and quality. When used in combination with a program guided by the NTMA Metalworking Training System, the standards provide the testing and evaluation tools needed to measure success. Students and workers trained to meet the standards can earn industry recognized credentials. Level I details skills expected of a machinist with 12 to 18 months training and experience. Level II includes mid-range skills required by an advanced student. Level III reflects journeyman-level skills.
