Finding the Total Cost of Your Product -
Every mold has a price - the figure quoted you on the bottom of the RFQ. That price is a "good faith' estimate and includes the hard costs of design time, raw materials, mold components, programming and machining time. The "cost" of a mold includes many more factors that aren't always measurable in terms of the actual mold build. The true cost of the mold is more than the price you agreed to pay on the RFQ. The true cost of the mold includes all of the costs-to-manufacture. Instead of just asking "What is the price of this mold?", you may want to also ask "What is the total cost to manufacture for this product?" Download our worksheet to assist in determining the total cost to manufacture your product. Download a worksheet to find the "True" cost of your molds. - Click here.

The Advantages of U.S. Molds

What Characterizes a Good, High-Production Mold?
The difference between a well-designed and solidly built mold, (A) planned to produce reliably good quality products at the lowest cost, and a low-cost mold (B) intended for the same product, can usually be seen right from the start, by visually comparing the two molds, and becomes obvious after operating the mold for a relatively short time. * (excerpted from "Selecting Injection Molds, By Herbert Rees and Bruce Catoen.) Tips to Make the Mold Buying Process Easier
Excerpted from “Purchasing Injection Molds: A Buyer’s Guide”, by: Clare Goldsberry
Buying a mold is a complex and sometimes tedious process, but a few rules can help make the process easier. They’re not written in stone, but you’ll find that to most moldmakers they are gospel.

How to Specify Molds for Silicone
Good communication between the mold buyer and the moldmaker is imperative. It is vitally important that the buyer furnish the moldmakers with all the necessary specifications to build a mold that fits all the pertinent requirements of the buyer’s facilities and operating procedures. These are items such as mold type, number of cavities, and automation requirements. It is critical that each moldmaker receive identical information from which to quote. Without this communication, the quotations will not be realistic and will require....click here to download article and read more.

Mold Maintenance Tips
When most people think about mold maintenance, they think about the mold sitting on a cart or table in some state of disassembly being cleaned, polished, or examined. In some cases, that may be all of the maintenance that the molds receive, but (hopefully) your molds only spend limited time on the cart and they spend a lot of their time in the presses making you money. A lot of the time spent on the carts and in the tool shop could be reduced if more time and attention were spent on the molds while they are in the presses running. Click to read more tips from Brian Young, Asst. Professor of Engineering, Plastics Department, Penn State University.
